Abstract

This paper is to read Park, Taewon’s ‘Ae-yok’(‘lust’) of which setting is Jeong-dong in the 1930s. Jeong-dong was the historical space like the palimpsest paper which Emperor Go-jong would establish the basis of the Korean Empire, as well as was the most alienated space which most of embassies enclosed. Park shows its geopolitical aspects with the scale of a diorama-like with main character Ha-woong and other characters look like hollywood stars. The Narrator tries to go back to the time and arise hidden meaning of Deoksugung, the old palace of Hansung, as the space of historical- cultural palimpsest. This palace was the modern architecture which had built as the center of the Korean Empire, independent nation. ‘Ae-yok’ is about Ha-woong wandering among three women on the surface. But its story expanded to the matter of choice among three kinds of geopolitical spaces-Kyungsung, Hansung and the country- represented by each woman fundamentally. Ha-woong cannot choose one of them easily and agonizes. At last, he writes and read his letter and declares he will go out of the capital city, Kyungsung. However, his declaration leads him into temptation. He gets two other messages which represent Kyungsung and Hansung each other. The novel ends as he goes to meet ‘the third girl’ who represents Kyungsung. But this ending is a kind of fake ending. Because there is another message. If we follow this message, we can find the historical event happened in Jeong-dong and its political hidden meaning.
