Abstract
The two music forms of "Chinese style songs" and "Chinese ancient style songs" that emerged and became popular in China in the 21st century have led the trend of cultural development in China and are also widely sung among the people. The lyrics genre and musical flow of "Chinese style songs" and "Chinese ancient style songs" are similar, leading to confusion and controversy between the concepts in China. In this dissertation, the musical styles and characteristics of the two genres are explored based on various academic data, and it could be seen that the existing literatures describe musical characteristics from a similar perspective that is not differentiated. Until recently, discussions and studies on various aspects of each of these two musical forms, such as cultural, musicality, and historicity, have been conducted, but the essay on musical characteristics in previous studies is not very different as it only explains the difference between the two by dealing with limited aspects of instrument, lyric form, history, and culture. In this study, as a result of comparing and analyzing the characteristics of the two genres of music from multiple perspectives, a clear difference in regularity in the musical characteristics is found in addition to the similarities between the musical characteristics of the two genres, indicating that this has meaning and value from a new perspective that can accurately distinguish between "Chinese style songs" and "Chinese ancient style songs". Specifically, by focusing on the analysis of "melody", "chord progression", "rhythm", and "Specific pitch variations in Chinese opera style singing" of the two musical forms songs, their similarities and differences have been drawn. The research has found that there are different patterns in the "frequency of Bian Gong's appearance," "difference in musical tonality," and "core chord progression types" of the two types of songs. These different points provide a new and differentiated way to more easily determine which songs are "Chinese style songs" and "Chinese ancient style songs" from a musical perspective. And these also provide a musical theoretical benchmark for distinguishing between the two types of music. This research aims to lay an academic foundation for the fusion of traditional materials and popular music.
