Abstract
· Research topics: This paper systematically compares and analyses modern music education in China and South Korea, examining differences between the two countries in three dimensions: music education for young people, music teaching content, and school system construction. · Research background: Since the mid-to-late 19th century, under the dual pressures of Western imperialist impact and internal social transformation, China and South Korea successively embarked on the process of modern state-building. Music education, as an integral part of educational modernisation and cultural policy, played a pivotal role in the institutional reforms of both countries. However, existing research has primarily focused on the history of music education within a single nation, lacking a systematic comparison of China and South Korea within the same temporal and spatial framework across different periods and dimensions. This limitation has restricted the overall understanding of the patterns of music education modernisation in both countries, which is precisely the entry point and significance of this study. · Differences from prior research: This study breaks away from the traditional approach of focusing on the internal development of a single country. By systematically comparing modern music education in China and South Korea within the East Asian historical and cultural context, it offers a new perspective, revealing the similarities and differences in the development of modern music education, and providing historical insights for understanding the development of modern music education in both countries. · Research method: This study primarily employs literature analysis and comparative research methods, combined with diachronic research methods, to systematically examine the developmental trajectories of modern music education in China and South Korea. Using historical time periods as a thread, it compares the commonalities and differences in modern music education between the two countries, explores their connections to social, political, and cultural contexts, and proposes potential future developmental paths based on these findings. · Research results: Through systematic comparative analysis, this study reveals that under the fundamental historical circumstances of ‘sovereignty’ and ‘colonialism,’ modern music education in China and South Korea followed two distinctly different developmental paths. China's music education evolved into an ‘endogenous’ autonomous modernisation practice serving the goals of ‘national salvation’ and ‘national rejuvenation.’ In contrast, South Korea underwent an ‘exogenous’ passive modernisation process characterised by intense struggles over cultural identity, driven by the continuous intervention of foreign cultures (religion and colonialism). This core difference determined systematic disparities between the two countries in terms of youth enlightenment, curriculum content, and school systems. · Contribution points and expected effects: This study not only provides historical insights into the modernisation of music education in China and South Korea but also expands the research horizons of comparative education and music education history in East Asia, offering theoretical support and practical guidance for future educational cooperation and policy-making between China and South Korea.
