어느 피식민자의 자기성찰 —장혁주(張赫宙)의 『나의 풍토기(わが風土記)』를 중심으로—

본 연구의 목적은 장혁주(張赫宙)의 문학을 바라보는 하나의 관문으로서 그의 수필집 『나의 풍토기(わが風土記)』(1942)에 나타난 조선인/일본어 사용자로서의 다층적 정체성을 살펴보는 것이다. 일본어에 대해 ‘지방어로서의 조선어’, 그리고 조선어=경성어에 대해 ‘지방어로서의 경상도 방언’이라는 이른바 지방어의 지방어를 향유하도록 운명지어진 장혁주는 식민 모국의 국어를 모범적으로 학습하여 사용함으로써 그는 조선어가 가진 지방성과 경상도 방언이 가진 지방성을 동시에 초월하여 신분 상승을 욕망하며, 성취하려는 근대인으로 거듭나려 했다. 그런데 장혁주의 이런 조야한 근대인의 면모로부터 촉발된 일본어 글쓰기는 개인적인 차원과 민족적인 차원을 수시로 넘나든다. 이것이 잘 드러나는 텍스트가 당시 선풍적인 인기를 끌었던 와쓰지 테쓰로의 『풍토(風土)』(1935)를 적극적으로 수용하여 기획한 『나의 풍토기(わが風土記)』이다. 장혁주는 ‘풍토론’의 기초이론에 입각하여 조선 풍토의 숙명성을 인정하고 조선인으로서의 정체성과 ‘일본어=국어’ 사용자로서의 정체성을 『나의 풍토기』에서 복합적으로 드러낸다. 그의 풍토기에는 조선인과 내지인의 정체성이 혼재해 있으면서 이 두 정체성이 때로는 긴장하기도 하고 때로는 타협하기도 하는 등 다양한 모습이 나타난다.
Abstract
This study is aiming to inquire multi-layered identity of Jang Hyeok-ju(張赫宙) constituted from his position as a Korean(precisely, a person of Chosŏn)/a Japanese language user appeared on My Topological Record(『わが風土記』, 1942), collection of his essays through which we can consider his literatures. Jang, who was destined to possess as it were ‘provincialism of provincialism’ as Gyeongsang-do(경상도) dialect to Gyeongsung(경성)’s so also Korean(also, Chosŏn) language to Japanese desired the upwardly mobile. So he tried to be a modern beyond his provinciality belong to Korean and Gyeongsang-do dialect by learning national language of colonial ruler excellently. However Jang’s Japanese writing caused by his substandard modern aspect covers a range of personal and racial level at the same time. That appears well in My Topological Record(『わが風土記』) designed by adopting Watsuji Tetsuro(和辻哲朗)’s Topology(『風土』, 1935) that was sensationally popular at that time.. With this text, Jang recognized the topological fate of Chosŏn with a base on basic theories of ‘topology’ and complicatedly revealed his identity as a Korean and also a ‘Japanese=National language’ user. The record in which identities as a Korean and a Japanese user mixed, so sometimes they conflict and sometimes compromise each other, shows various aspects.
