Abstract

This article reconstructs the central question that preoccupied Jang Hyuk-ju’s writing immediately after Japan’s defeat:“Is it possible to live in Japan as a Zainichi, or, more precisely, as a Zainichi writer?” Three distinct yet interconnected forces appear to have compelled Jang to confront this question. Firstly, the abrupt ‘post-colonial’ yet simultaneously ‘nationalist’ shift experienced by the Zainichi community in Japan at the time; secondly, the strong policy orientation toward a monolithic nation-state pursued by the post-war Japanese government, which sought to erase its recent past as a multi-ethnic empire; and finally, Jang Hyuk-ju’s lifelong, nearly obsessive devotion to the Japanese language. These three layers of factors collectively converged, ultimately leading Jang to decide on naturalization. The irony of Jang Hyuk-ju’s writing lies in the fact that, while his observations regarding internal issues and specific incidents within the Zainichi society after the war were not entirely devoid of truth, the situation developed in an entirely different direction. His consistent critical distance from the fierce nationalism of Koreans might even be viewed as a certain consistency, particularly when compared to other pro-Japanese Korean intellectuals whose attitudes rapidly shifted. However, in his efforts to escape the Korean ethnic consciousness and “political excess,” the writing Jang Hyuk-ju pursued ultimately embraced the ideology of ethnic homogeneity and purity advocated by post- war Japan, thereby revealing an unavoidable self-contradiction.
