Abstract
The purpose of this study is to reveal that Catherine de Médicis’s religious policy contributed to the establishment of a spirit of tolerance in French society by laying the foundation for religious freedom. To this end, this paper compared and analyzed Henry IV’s Edict of Nantes, known as the first example of granting religious freedom, and Edict of Beaulieu issued by Catherine. Catherine issued pacification edicts for the peaceful coexistence of Protestantism and Catholicism at a time when France was threatened by feudal noble forces centering on the Guise and Bourbon families, religious wars and neighboring countries. Among pacification edicts, the Edict of Beaulieu is known to have surrendered the most rights to Protestants. The Edict of Nantes shows a similar aspect to the Edict of Beaulieu for its purpose, that is, restoring peace in the French kingdom and maintaining and strengthening royal authority in the peaceful coexistence of Catholic and Protestantism. To this end, just as Edict of Beaulieu treated the people as citizens, not religious people, and granted Protestants the right to worship, right to engage in any occupation and office, the right to a fair trial, and the right to safety, the Edict of Nantes applied the same principle. As a result, it can be seen that the religious policy of peaceful coexistence pursued by Catherine was inherited and developed by Henry IV’s Edict of Nantes and became the basis for religious freedom. Therefore, Catherine’s image as an evil witch who manipulated her sons through clever manipulation should be re-established as the image of a female leader who made the path for religious freedom.
