‘한밭정신의 뿌리 찾기’에 새긴 열정: 해암(海岩) 서해길 박사의 시민리더스피릿

이 글은 지역발전의 정서적 토대축적의 필요를 환기하려는 의도의 일환으로 작성된 것으로서, 대전-충청지역의 발전에 기여했던 해암 서해길(徐海吉, 1938~2001) 박사의 시민리더스피릿에 관한 내용을 담고 있다. 그는 분열과 대립으로 소란한 다중의 시대가 요하는 시민리더스피릿의 한 전형을 지역사회 활동을 통해 보여주었던 인물이다. 중용(中庸)의 가치 실현을 임중도원의 책무로 삼은 자강불식의 실천정신을 통해 사회의 숱한 갈등을 돌파할 것을 역설했던 그의 노력은 철학을 공부하며 가르치는 연구와 교육의 현장에서 끓은 후, 평범한 대학교수이자 시민의 일원으로 대전-충청지역의 발전에 열정을 쏟았던 시간을 통해 폭발했다. 이 글은 중용의 가치를 실현하기위해 취한 자강불식과 임중도원의 정신에서 발현되었던 해암의 교육과 연구의 삶을 짚어본 후, 지역사회의 발전에 기여했던 그의 시민리더스피릿의 귀감적 의의를 조명했다.
Abstract
This paper is written as a part of the intention of evoking the need to accumulate an emotional foundation for development of region, and contains the civic leader spirit of Dr. Haeam Seo Hae-gil(1938-2001) who contributed to the development of the Daejeon-Chungcheong region. He is a person who showed through community activities a typical civic leader spirit required in this age of noisy multitude due to division and confrontation. His efforts that emphasized overcoming the numerous conflicts in society through the spirit of Self-discipline(自强不息), which made the realizing of the value of Moderation(中庸), the responsibility of Imjungdowon(任重道遠), exploded through the time when he devoted himself to the development of the Daejeon-Chungcheong region as an ordinary university professor and citizen. This paper examines the life of Haeam’s education and research expressed in the spirit of self-discipline and Imjungdowon which was taken to realize the value of moderation, and illuminates the exemplary significance of his civic leader spirit that contributed to the development of the community.
