본 논문은 낭트칙령 협상과정에서 나타난 중재자 역할을 중심으로 필리프 뒤플레시스-모르네의 생애와 활동을 조망하는데 그 목적이 있다. 모르네는 왕에 대한 충성심과 개신교에 대한 신실함을 바탕으로 위그노들과 앙리 4세 사이에서 중재자 역할을 하면서 낭트칙령을 합의하는데 중요한 기여를 했다. 1593년부터 1597년까지 앙리 4세는 낭트칙령 협상을 위해 개신교 총회를 허락했는데, 이 과정에서 한편으로는 개신교 신학자로서 위그노들을 대변하였고, 다른 한편으로는 앙리 4세의 참사원으로서 왕의 의지를 대표하였다. 특히 1596년 루덩총회와 1597년 샤텔레총회 기간 앙리 4세와 위그노들이 첨예하게 대립했을 때, 양자를 중재하며 단절을 피하여 협상을 계속하도록 이끌었다. 이러한 모르네의 노력으로 낭트칙령 협상은 여러번의 위기에도 단절없이 진행되었으며, 결국 1598년 4월 13일 그 결실을 보게 되었다. 이로써 1562년 시작되어 8차례동안 진행된 종교전쟁이 종식되었고 위그노들은 이전의 평화칙령들보다 더욱 광범위한 권리를 부여받게 되었다.
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to examine the life and activities of Philippe Duplessis-Mornay, focusing on his role as a mediator during the negotiation process for the Edict of Nantes. Based on his loyalty to the king and his devout Protestant faith, Mornay acted as a mediator between the Huguenots and King Henry IV, significantly contributing to the agreement on the Edict of Nantes. From 1593 to 1597, Henry IV permitted Protestant assemblies for negotiating the Edict. During these assemblies, Duplessis-Mornay represented the Huguenots as a Protestant theologian while also representing the king’s intentions as a royal advisor. Thanks to Mornay’s efforts, the negotiations for the Edict of Nantes progressed without interruption despite several crises, finally bearing fruit on April 13, 1598. This marked the end of the religious wars that had started in 1562 and granted the Huguenots broader rights than previous peace edicts.
