현대 독자가 과거의 문학을 깊이 있게 이해함으로써 자신의 언어적-문화적 역량을 신장하는 데까지 이르는 것은 쉽지 않다. 낯선 어휘나 어법도 문제지만, 문학적 대응 양식 역시도 익숙하지 않기 때문이다. 비유적 의미에서의 ‘번역’이 필요하다. 이 논문에서는 시조 이해의 과정이 번역의 과정과 구조적 유사성을 지닌다는 사실에 주목하였다. 원론적으로 말하면, 모든 이해 활동은 일종의 번역 활동이기도 하다. 마치 번역의 상황처럼, 고어(목표어)를 현대어(도착어)로 바꿔야 하고, 그 변환의 과정에서 텍스트 차원과 문화적 차원, 미학적 차원에 걸쳐 여러 가지 문제들에 직면하여 자신만의 답을 찾아야 한다. 이에 이 연구에서는 시조 영역의 과정에서 제기된 어학적, 문학적, 미학적 문제와 그 문제를 해결하기 위한 접근 방법에 주목함으로써, 시조 교육의 방법에 대한 시사점을 얻고자 하였다. 마치 번역가들처럼, 현대독자들 또한 시조의 단어나 구문은 물론이고 시조 특유의 어법과 종결 방식 등을 오늘날의 언어 규범과 표현 관습, 그리고 문화적-미적 코드에 맞춰 풀이하고 재구성하는 과정을 거침으로써 시조를 깊이 알게 되고 마침내 향유할 수도 있게 된다는 사실을 보여주고자 하였다.
Abstract
It is not easy for modern readers to develop their language skill and cultural literacy by understanding old literature deeply. Unfamiliar vocabulary and idioms are a challenge, but literary code or conventions and aesthetic responses are also unfamiliar to the readers. We would like to show that the process of understanding old poetry has a structural similarity with the process of translating them. In principle, all understanding is a kind of translation. An old language [target language] must be translated into a modern language [destination language], and in this process, there is no choice but to face problems across dimensions [textual, cultural, and aesthetic dimension] and find own answers. This study aims to gain implications for the method of poetry education by paying attention to the problems related to linguistics, literature, and aesthetics that were raised in the process of translating Sijo in English and explores different approaches to solving the problems. Modern readers, like translators, translate not only words and phrases of Sijo but also their expressions and literary endings, such as modern language norms, expressions, and cultural-aesthetic codes. We would like to show that our modern readers and students could enjoy and learn old poetry like Sijo through the translating process.
