Abstract
Interest in Korean literature is expanding due to the influence of the Korean Wave, and the need for translation and education of Korean literature targeting foreign language readers is also demanded. In this situation, Korean researchers need to know how sijo(時調) is being translated, what difficulties there are, and how sijo is being recreated by responding to the difficulties. This is the critical mind of this thesis. For specific discussion, Rutt's Sijo translation was taken as an example. By carefully examining the translation of Rutt, it was possible to know the difficulties and limitations of translating Sijo, a cultural and literary text. Specifically, there is the problem of translating an article that does not exist in the grammatical system of English but affects the overall atmosphere or tone of a poem, the problem of translating an adjective that is an evaluative word that describes a situation or condition, and the problem of translating Chinese characters that have multiple meanings are compressed. And there was the problem of translating special poetic and cultural languages such as '절로', and above all, there was an aesthetic problem of translating '시조다움(Sijo-likeness)' into English. The sijo translated by Rutt can be said to be Rutt's answer and creative solution to problems and difficulties of all dimensions. As a result, it was confirmed that an English sijo similar to the original sijo but distinct from it was born. Considering the influence of Rutt and his collection of Sijo translated into English, understanding Rutt's translation itself has the meaning of understanding the process of creating the aesthetics of English Sijo. Furthermore, it deepens our understanding of what challenges to face or solve when trying to translate Sijo into other languages, how to respond to those challenges, and what will happen as a result. Of course, the sijo translated into English in the United States, including Rutt's, is not perfect. However, this paper did not point out and criticize the parts that deviated from the original sijo or changed parts. Because I didn't see it being productive. The translation is incomplete and always a kind of alternative, and the journey to find a better translation of Sijo is still ahead of us. New answers to the various problems and difficulties of translation are possible. It is hoped that Korean researchers will also participate in various ways and levels in the translation of sijo, which can deepen the understanding of the universality of sijo as world literature and the uniqueness of sijo as Korean literature, and confirm the productivity of sijo. As a result, I hope that the aesthetics of Sijo as world literature will expand and evolve.
