Abstract
This paper provides an analysis of the characteristics of an android named ‘Hadaly’ in The Future Eve (L'Ève future) by Auguste Villiers de L'Isle-Adam and suggests how these bear a resemblance to film media. Automata prevailed from the 18th to mid-19th centuries and was the forerunner to film media, which emerged in the late 19th century. This argument is based on the perspective that automata and film are interrelated, not only in technology practices but also in persistent representation of the human body using non-human materials. The research resulted in three primary findings. First, the mechanical components and technical specifications of the android in L'Ève future are similar to those of film. Villiers de L'Isle-Adam based the android's body on modern technology, chemistry, and developments in electricity. Similarly, film consists of celluloid, a synthetic material resulting from chemistry, and in its earliest form by Edison, required electricity. Second, the android and film are identical in terms of ‘voice.’ The android does not actually speak but uses an internal amplifier to project the voice of Sowana, a narcoleptic patient. In this way, it resembles the earliest films did not include sound but was supplemented by external ones such as a speaker, musicians and some sound devices. Identity is also an important aspect of voice in this context; Sowana obtains vicarious satisfaction through the android and cannot separate her identity from that of Hadaly’s. Linked to the android, her experiences are similar to those of spectators watching a film, in terms of ‘the mirror stage’ suggested by Christian Lacan. Third, the android and film both show the contradictory properties of life and death. In life, the production processes for both the android and film can be seen as a metaphor for childbirth. In death, which is fundamental and inevitable, both machines represent humans. Thus, the impetus to represent humans is indeed the subjugation of death. Although film media attempts to overcome death, it cannot be completely removed because the mechanical components of automata and film evoke the properties of death, which stimulates both the consciousness and unconsciousness of spectators.
