Abstract

In addition to Buddhism, ancient traditional beliefs, such as mountain beliefs and ocean beliefs, exist in the establishment of Shikoku Henro, a representative pilgrimage of Japanese Buddhism. At the end of the Heian period, Shikoku was a place for the practitioners of the field and mountain practice. Since then, mountain worship has had a huge impact on the establishment of Henro by creating Shugendo and combining it with Buddhism and the common people's Buddhism. The practice of the field, which originated from the traditional view of the other world at sea of the Japanese, became the religious origin of Shikoku Henro as it was recreated as the Potarak faith and the voyeuristic faith to conceive of Potarak Pure Land in later. The biggest religious factor that served as the central axis of Henro's establishment is the belief in the Daishi. The origin of the Daishi's belief is that in Japan, there has been a legend of the Daishi (大子) who traveled to various places since ancient times, and it is closely related to the replacement of the legendary Daishi with the Daishi (大師) of Buddhism. Since then, all the main characters in the Daishi legend in Shikoku have been changed to the Kobo Daishi in Shikoku thanks to Koya Hijiri's careful spreading of the belief in Gukai's Samadhi Faith. This led to a strong belief in the Daishi of Kobo. The so-called Kobo Daishi's faith, which has been reborn between myths and history, is still the biggest driving force for pilgrims to practice Shikoku Henro today.
