Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explain the three-pattern accents of the Kokonogi dialect of Fukui Prefecture, Japan in the framework of the Optimality Theory. In the Kokonogi dialect, when there is no accent in the underlying form, it appears as type B, which is unaccented, in the surface form, and when there is an accent in the underlying form, it appears as type A or type C, which has an accent in the surface form. This is due to the constraint Dep(accent) that prohibits the insertion of an accent and the constraint Max(accent) that prohibits the deletion of an accent. The difference between type A and type C appears in more than 3 mora, which can be explained by adopting the faithfulness constraint NoFlop(HdFt) for the head foot. In a four-mora noun consisting of only light syllables, if the head foot of the underlying form is the first foot, the head foot of the surface form also becomes the first foot due to the constraint NoFlop(HdFt). In this case, the accent appears on the second mora due to the constraints InFt and RhType=I. On the other hand, if the head foot of the underlying form is the last foot, the accent appears on the second mora at the end of the word due to the constraint NonFin-μ as the last foot becomes the head foot.
