Abstract

In Kagoshima Japanese, the accent is specified in the lexicon, and both accented and non-accented words appear under the protection of the faithfulness constraints Dep(LA) and Max(LA). However, in loanwords where the accent is not specified in the lexicon, the markedness constraint WordAccent, which is subordinate to these faithfulness constraints, operates, leading to the phenomenon known as the 'Emergence of the Unmarked Effect', where accented words appear as surface forms. Consequently, the majority of loanwords in Kagoshima Japanese are characterized by their accentuation. The accent in Kagoshima Japanese falls on the penultimate syllable of accented words. This paper elucidates the penultimate accent by employing constraints such as RightMost, InitFt, NonFin, FtBin, and RhType=I and establishing a hierarchy between these constraints as ⟦RightMost, InitFt ≫ FtBin, NonFin ≫ RhType=I⟧. For monosyllabic words, pitch fall occurs within a single syllable. This paper employs the concept of mora and applies the constraint NonFin-μ, which forbids accentuation on the final mora of a word, in order to elucidate this phenomenon. Furthermore, the constraint NonFin-μ can elucidate the exclusive occurrence of vowel lengthening in accented monosyllabic words in Kagoshima Japanese.
