Abstract
This study aims to explain tonal patterns of the English alphabet letters in Kagoshima Japanese within the framework of Optimality Theory. In Kagoshima Japanese, the tonal pattern of polysyllabic alphabet letters appears as Tone A without exception. This is due to the constraint WdAcc that requires a prosodic word to contain a prominence peak. In monosyllabic alphabet letters, when the rime consists of a single long vowel, the tonal pattern is mainly Tone B, and when it consists of a diphthong, it is mainly Tone A. This behavior can be attributed to the phonetic similarity between diphthongs and contour tones. In the Kagoshima Japanese, all diphthongs of the alphabet letters are falling diphthongs, which are better suited to HL-type contour tones than single long vowels. This means that the constraint *HL-σViVj, which prohibits syllables consisting of a falling diphthong in the rime from having HL-type contour tones, ranks lower than the constraint *HL-σV:, which prohibits syllables consisting of a monophthong with a long vowel in the rime from having HL-type contour tones. *HL-σViVj ranks lower than WdAcc, so the tonal pattern of a syllable whose rime consists of a diphthong is Tone A. On the other hand, *HL-σV: ranks higher than WdAcc, so the tonal pattern of a syllable whose rime consists of a monophthong with a long vowel is Tone B.
