Abstract

This study investigates how the Korean grammatical construction “-(으)ㄹ 것이다” is rendered in Japanese and analyzes its semantic correspondences. The study categorizes the semantic uses of “-(으)ㄹ 것이다” into three types: [Conjecture I], which expresses a conjecture close to certainty; [Conjecture II], which expresses an uncertain conjecture; and [Volition]. It also examines their Japanese equivalents. The data were drawn from Korean novels and their Japanese translations, and the corresponding expressions were analyzed by usage type. The results show that both [Conjecture I] and [Conjecture II] most frequently correspond to “~(の)だろう,” but a variety of other forms also appear depending on context. In contrast, the volitional use does not correspond to “~(の)だろう” but to forms such as “~つもりだ,” “verb conclusive/ます,” and “sentence-final particles.” In total, fifteen types of Japanese expressions were identified. Specifically, [Conjecture I] corresponds to “~(の)だろう,” “~はすだ,” “verb/adjective conclusive forms,” “sentence-final particles,” and “んだ(よ)”; [Conjecture II] to “~(の)だろう,” “~と思う,” and “~かもしれない”; and [Volition] to “verb conclusive/ます[ません],” “~つもりだ,” and “sentence-final particles.” These findings demonstrate that although “-(으)ㄹ 것이다” appears in a single morphological form in Korean, its Japanese equivalents vary considerably depending on semantic function.
