Abstract
This study examines the morphological characteristics of 808 common Chinese characters in Korea, China, and Japan. The number and proportion of isomorphic and heteromorphic kanji were examined in terms of the number of five classes and the number of classes, and the results are as follows. First, among the 808 common Chinese characters in Korea, Japan, and China, the highest proportion of isomorphic Chinese characters is in the order of Korea-China-Japan, Korea-Japan, China-Japan, and Korea-China, while the highest proportion of heteromorphic Chinese characters is in the order of Korea-China, China-Japan, Korea-Japan, and Korea-China-Japan. Second, in both Korea and Japan, 666 kanji (82.43%) were categorized as isomorphic characters, while 142 kanji (17.57%) were categorized as heteromorphic characters. Third, we categorized them based on the JLPT scores and found that they were distributed about 14% to 25% by level (N1⁓N5), with 116 characters and 204 characters. Finally, when we categorized the characters into homomorphic and heteromorphic based on the JLPT classification, the total number of homomorphic characters was 650 (80.45%), and the total number of heteromorphic characters was 158 (19.55%). In conclusion, the 808 common Chinese characters of the three countries are evenly distributed among the JLPT classes, with the highest proportion of homomorphic Chinese characters in both Korea and Japan, over 80%. Therefore, we believe that this study was a fundamental attempt to explore efficient kanji education in Korea, China, and Japan.
