Abstract
The purpose of this study is to explain Renjo that occurs in modern Japanese loanword within the framework of Optimality Theory. Renjo that occurs in modern Japanese loanwords mainly occurs when /n/ and a vowel are connected across a morpheme. When the semi-vowel /w/ is followed, Renjo does not occur and the /n/ becomes nasalized vowel. This is different from Renjo that occurred in late middle Japanese, and because of this, the opinion was suggested that Renjo in modern Japanese is not due to the Syllable Contact Law, which is the reason for Renjo in late middle Japanese, but due to the constraint Onset. This study points out the problems with this explanation and argues that Renjo that occurs in in modern Japanese loanword is due to the Syllable Contact Law, as in late middle Japanese. In other words, Renjo and nasal vowelization that appear in modern Japanese loanwords are all phonological conspiracy to comply with the Syllable Contact Constraint.
