본고에서는 Integrity 제약을 조음위치에 따라 Integrity(Lab), Integrity(Dor), Integrity(Cor)로 구분하여 이러한 현상을 설명한다.

Abstract

This paper seeks to explain, within the framework of Optimality Theory, the Medieval Japanese consonant gemination known as Renjo. There were instances in which a consonant preceded a vowel or semivowel by a syllable boundary due to the acceptance of Chinese loanwords. If there had been no phonological shift in these instances, the Syllable Connection Constraint would have been violated. Japanese developed consonant gemination to prevent this violation. To stick to the Syllable Connection Constraint, some languages opted for re-syllabification, while others opted for consonant gemination. This paper discusses this distinction in terms of the hierarchical relationship between the Align-R constraint and the Integrity requirement across languages. Renjo only occurred in the Medieval Japanese when the coda consonant before a vowel or semivowel was [n] or [t]. This study explains this phenomena by dividing the Integrity constraint according the place of articulation into Integrity(Lab), Integrity(Dor), and Integrity(Cor). When labial and dorsal codas preceded vowels or semivowels, Renjo did not occur, and vowel insertion took place. The Dep constraint outweighed the Integrity(Cor) constraint, thus when Coronal coda [n] or [t] preceding vowels or semi-vowels, Renjo, not vowel insertion, happened.
