도쿠토미 형제와 『불여귀』에 대한 고찰 -애정과 불신으로 이루어진 이례적인 출판-

Abstract

Tokutomi Roka's best-selling novel "The Hototogisu(不如帰)" (1898-1899) was translated and published as "The Bul-yeogwi(不如帰)" in Korea in 1912 and gained popularity. However, "The Bul-yeogwi" has many differences from other publications at that time, and it is also a mysterious work. This paper attempts to approach the Korean publication of "The Bul-yeogwi" from a new perspective of the author, Roka and his brother Soho. First, Chapter 2 confirms the relationship between Tokutomi brothers and Korea by referring to the books and letters of Roka and Soho, and Chapter 3 considered the reason why "The Hototogisu" was selected for Korea Publishing through Roka's view of Korea and Soho's thoughts on "The Hototogisu". In Chapter 4, I attempted to examine the three mysteries of "The Bul-yeogwi" from the perspectives of "books," "printed in Japan," and "translated novels." The investigation revealed that the Government-General of Korea had "national education" and Soho welcomed Roka's visit to Korea in 1913 to avoid the company's business crisis, but shortly after that, Roka and Soho broke up. From the background of the publication of "The Hototogisu" in the United States and the thoughts of Soho's "The Hototogisu", it seems that Soho's work was behind the selection of "The Bul-yeogwi" for Korean publishing. In addition, it seems that "The Bul-yeogwi" was published as a book because of the flow of the Korean publishing industry at that time, sales in Japan, and unprecedented form, it is suspected that Soho and Roka are involved in the publication and printing in Japan due to the connection in the Japanese Christian world. And Soho suggested the possibility of instructing "translation" in order to inform Korea of ​​"The Hototogisu".
