Abstract

This paper empirically examines the use patterns of repeated utterances that indicate participation and appreciation in everyday conversations in Korean and Japanese from an interactional perspective. The analysis results of this paper are as follows: (A) In conversations in both Korean and Japanese, the repetition of others' utterances to indicate participation and appreciation is most frequently used as a means to express a sense of unity. (B) Compared to Japanese conversations, in Korean conversations, repeated utterances are more frequently used as a means to express emotions. These "emotion-expressing" repeated utterances often elicit laughter from the participants or evaluative comments on the repeated elements. Additionally, in Korean conversations, repeated utterances are frequently used to express disagreement with the interlocutor. Such repeated utterances induce the interlocutor to provide reasons or elicit laughter from the participants. (C) Compared to Korean conversations, in Japanese conversations, repeated utterances are more frequently used to indicate clear reception of the interlocutor's speech. These repeated utterances serve to facilitate the interlocutor's story and elicit additional information or explanations. Furthermore, the rate of reusing elements spoken by the interlocutor to express a sense of unity is higher in Japanese conversations. Such repeated utterances often lead to additional utterances that emphasize a sense of unity among the participants.
