Abstract
This study investigates repetitions occurring in Chinese conversations between native speakers and speakers whose native language is Korean. This study uses both conversation analysis and corpus-based quantitative methods to show that repetitions function as a means of providing confirmation, showing that the speaker is in agreement with the previous speaker, providing answers to questions, initiating repair in the next turn, and displaying the speaker’s stance or attitudes etc. Repetitions by Korean speakers can be used not only for smooth communication, but also for the studying of Mandarin Chinese. Finally this study suggests that repetition among Korean speakers is interactively and socially organized between the Korean speaker and the Chinese native speaker in the unfolding interaction and intersubjectivity is preserved between the participants.ㅍ
