Abstract

This study examines the localization of the Korean–Japanese idol group IZ*ONE in Japan by considering the structure of the Japanese music industry, the history of audition programs, and the consumption practices of young Japanese women. While previous research largely attributes IZ*ONE’s popularity to globalization, suggesting that Japanese fans were drawn to globally oriented Korean idols in contrast to Japan’s relatively insular music market, this study instead focuses on the group’s concrete strategies of fan engagement. IZ*ONE actively adopted one-on-one fan interaction events commonly associated with AKB48, reflecting the Japanese industry’s emphasis on experiential participation over physical media. The group also produced content foregrounding cooperation and communication between Korean and Japanese members, fostering a sense of emotional closeness and vicarious interaction among Japanese fans. Moreover, IZ*ONE consistently referenced cultural trends favored by Japanese women in their teens and twenties—including Korean fashion, cuisine, and beauty—contributing to the spread of Korean cultural styles on Japanese social media. These findings suggest that IZ*ONE’s success in Japan cannot be understood solely through globalization. Rather, it resulted from sustained, localized strategies of fan communication and cultural resonance.
