Abstract

This paper presents “Virtual Kyoto,” a long-term digital humanities initiative that reconstructs Kyoto’s historical urban environments across multiple periods and scales by integrating heterogeneous cultural resources within a GIS framework. We combine georeferenced historical maps, cadastral plans, insurance maps, aerial photographs, city directories, and building surveys with digitized visual/ textual sources—such as photographs, films, and pictorial representations—to produce time-sliced 2D/3D city models. Methodologically, the project advances (1) high-precision georeferencing and geocoding pipelines for legacy materials; (2) linkage of spatial features to documentary metadata; and (3) visualization of urban change through layered 3D models and web-based viewers. Case studies include reconstructions of early-modern Kyoto’s urban form and lost landmarks, the ancient grid city of Heian-kyō, and festival spaces modeled in “Virtual Gion Festival,” where procession routes are evaluated through simulation on detailed street-scale 3D models. These practices operationalize Spatial Humanities by coupling a geographical space–time framework with humanities evidence, enabling cross-disciplinary analyses of landscape, memory, and urban transformation. The paper argues that Virtual Kyoto functions as a platform for knowledge integration, cultural heritage preservation, and public engagement, demonstrating how spatial technologies can generate new historical insights. Finally, it outlines future directions—automated recognition and text mining with AI, higher-fidelity 3D/VR experiences, and international data interoperability—to scale the approach and strengthen collaborations between humanities scholars and data scientists.
