Abstract

The pervasive digital transformation is not only reshaping the fabric of society but also posing fundamental questions to the paradigm of education. Humanities education, with its core focus on textual interpretation and deep reflection on the human condition, faces unprecedented challenges in bridging the gap with the 'Digital Native' generation. Traditional lecture-based, text-centric teaching methods are proving insufficient in motivating modern learners who are accustomed to a dynamic environment of videos, images, and interactive content. This study originates from this critical awareness and seeks to explore methodologies for leveraging digital media platforms as effective tools for academic inquiry within Japanese culture education. It provides an in-depth analysis of two case studies implemented in the author's "Understanding Japanese Popular Culture" course and proposes two student-led projects designed to empower learners to transition from consumers of knowledge to active producers, using tools like Google 'My Maps' and 'Padlet'. The findings confirm that integrating digital platforms boosts learning motivation, cultivates critical thinking, and expands creative expression skills. However, this pedagogical approach concurrently introduces new challenges, namely the 'fair evaluation of creative work' and 'academic integrity in the age of generative AI'. This paper concludes by proposing that these are not merely tasks for individual instructors but constitute a 'common challenge' that requires the educational community as a whole to collaboratively establish new evaluation standards and educational ethics for the digital age.
