고전 소설 『장화홍련전』의 동화 개작에 관한 연구 ― 유아 그림책, 저학년 동화를 중심으로 ―

『장화홍련전』에는 표면적으로 드러나는 권선징악이라는 주제 이면에 오늘날의 관점에서 봤을 때 부당한 사회 구조, 불합리한 내용이 내재해 있다. 곧 조선 시대를 배경으로 하며 성인을 대상으로 했던 고전 소설 『장화홍련전』에는 오늘을 사는 아이들에게 설명하기 어려운 내용이 많다. 그럼에도 유아를 대상으로 하는 그림책 『장화홍련전』이나 저학년을 대상으로 하는 동화 『장화홍련전』의 경우 고전 소설 『장화홍련전』과 내용에 있어 크게 다르지 않다. 이에 본고에서는 고전 소설 『장화홍련전』이 동화 『장화홍련전』으로 개작되는 현황과 문제점을 살폈다. 고전 소설 『장화홍련전』의 폭력적인 내용이나 묘사가 저학년 동화 『장화홍련전』 혹은 유아 그림책 『장화홍련전』에서 그대로 재현되고 있는 상황을 문제로 제시하고, 동화 『장화홍련전』이 전달하는 권선징악이라는 주제의 효용성과 더불어 그 득실을 고민해 볼 때라고 제안하였다. 이를 위하여 본고에서는 동화로 개작된 『장화홍련전』의 문제로 낙태라는 소재와 쥐를 잡아 피칠하는 장면 묘사, 살인 교사나 살인 장면의 적나라한 묘사, 가정폭력에 대한 법적 사회적 용서와 묵인, 죽음을 대하는 태도, 결합 가족에 대한 부정적인 영향 등 다섯 가지로 정리하였다. 『장화홍련전』을 동화로 개작할 때 어떤 점을 유의해야 하고, 어떤 내용, 어떤 장면은 문제가 있다는 인식을 작가 및 출판사 관계자 그리고 연구자들이 함께 고민하고, 공론의 장으로 끌어올려야 할 것이다. 더하여 『장화홍련전』을 유아 그림책, 저학년 아동을 대상으로 하는 동화책으로 개작하여야 할 것인지 함께 고민해 볼 것을 제안한다.
Abstract
Behind the ostensible theme of Kwon-gwonseong-ryeon, "Janghwa Hong- ryeonjeon" has an unreasonable social structure and unreasonable content from today's perspective. In other words, the classic novel "Janghwa Hongryeonjeon", which was set in the Joseon Dynasty and was aimed at adults, has many contents that are difficult to explain to children living today. Nevertheless, in the case of the picture book "Janghwa Hongryeonjeon" for infants and the fairy tale "Janghwa Hongryeonjeon" for the lower grades, the contents are not much different from the classic novel "Janghwa Hongryeonjeon". Therefore, this paper examined the current status and problems of the classic novel "Janghwa Hongryeonjeon" being rewritten into a fairy tale "Janghwa Hongryeonjeon". It presented the situation in which the violent content or description of the classic novel "Janghwa Hongryeonjeon" is reproduced as it is in the lower-grade fairy tale "Janghwa Hongryeonjeon" or the children's picture book "Janghwa Hongryeonjeon" as a problem and suggested that it is time to consider the benefits and losses of the theme of "Janghwa Hongryeonjeon" delivered by the fairy tale "Janghwa Hongryeonjeon". To this end, the issue of "Janghwa Hongryeonjeon", which has been rewritten into a fairy tale, is summarized into five categories: the description of the scene of catching a mouse, the description of a murder teacher or murder scene, the legal and social forgiveness and acquiescence of domestic violence, the attitude toward death, and the negative impact on the combined family. When rewriting "Janghwa Hongryeonjeon" into a fairy tale, writers, publishers, and researchers should consider what points should be noted, and the perception that certain contents and scenes are problematic should be raised to a forum for public debate. In addition, it is suggested to consider whether "Janghwa Hongryeonjeon" should be rewritten as a children's book for children in the lower grades.
