Abstract

This study aims to establish a connection between comprehensive understanding of music history and the development of performance competencies by implementing a learner-centered approach to Music History, a foundational required course at a college of music. The participants were first-year orchestral instrument majors at K University in Daegu, South Korea. The course was designed to ex- plore the historical development of Western art music by examining stylistic changes across eras within their social and cultural contexts. Traditionally, Music History has been taught in a teach- er-centered manner, focusing on information delivery and student memorization due to its vast and complex content. To address this, the researcher developed a curriculum that supports holistic un- derstanding and connects directly to performance practice. Over two semesters, a Project-Based Learning (PjBL) model was applied, guiding students to collaboratively create music history timelines and design performance programs. Students actively presented and performed their work, applying historical knowledge to musical interpretation. Through this process, they gained a broader per- spective on historical continuity and demonstrated efforts to incorporate this understanding into their performances. Furthermore, working in teams fostered communication and collaboration skills. As a result, students who had previously engaged passively due to the challenging nature of the course showed increased motivation and a proactive attitude through experiential learning activities.
