The locus for focus model
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to identify the needs and priorities of non-music major university students regarding social competence and improvements in music liberal arts education, thereby providing devel opmental alternatives and foundational data for effective learner-centered music learning. To this end, based on survey data collected from 108 male and female university students at C University in Region C, Korea, data analysis methods including t-tests, IPA analysis, Borich's need assessment, and The locus for focus model analysis were performed to identify the elements commonly proposed as top priorities. Analysis results, first, the competencies prioritized in social competencies through Borich and The locus for focus mode are seven competencies: ‘self-acceptance’, ‘self-regulation’, ‘Enterprising spirit’, ‘emotional well-be ing’, ‘ownership’, ‘self-efficacy’, and ‘flexibility’. These include common elements, and the core com petencies of priority were confirmed to be identical. Second, as elements prioritized in the requirements for music liberal arts education, the learning content included “digital music content that sparks interest,” “educational content that allows exposure to various music activities,” “content matching students' in dividual music practice stages and receptive levels,” and “content enabling exploration of one's own mu sic-related activity information.” In the teaching method domain, elements such as “content integration that brings joy to daily school life” were identified. Therefore, it is necessary to meticulously reflect students' unique characteristics and needs in the music teaching and learning process, develop new teaching strat egies based on detailed educational content that supports “learner-centered teaching practices,” and im prove the liberal arts classroom environment accordingly. Furthermore, university liberal arts educators must adopt the mindset of lifelong learners who continuously learn and reflect. They should understand music arts education from the learner's perspective, reflect their needs, and consistently strive to design, develop, and implement new and innovative teaching methods through interdisciplinary learning content that fosters convergent thinking. This study proposes ongoing research and discussion on music education for non-music majors in university, considering the multifaceted aspects of university music liberal arts courses.
