공연 각색의 통합적 의미 표현 연구: 시모어 채트먼의 담화 요소 간 상호작용을 중심으로

본 연구는 공연 각색에서 부여된 새로운 의미가 무대 위에서 어떻게 통합적으로 표현되는지를 탐구하고자한다. 선행 연구들을 통해 각색에서 ‘새로운 의미’가 창출되는 인지적 메커니즘(1차 연구)과 이 의미가 원작‘이야기’를 전환 시키는 방식(2차 연구)을 규명한 데 이어, 본 연구는 그 최종 단계로서 전환된 이야기가 무대위 ‘담화’, 즉 ‘표현’으로 구현되는 과정을 논의한다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 공연의 의미 표현이 개별 요소의 단순한 합이 아닌, 다양한 담화 요소의 유기적 상호작용으로 구성된다는 전제하에 ‘통합적 담화 분석’ 방법론을도입하고, 네 편의 각색 공연 사례에 적용하여 그 효용성을 검증했다. 제주 무속 신화인 <원천강본풀이>를 각색한 네 편의 공연 사례를 분석하여 이 방법론의 효용성을 검증했다. 인형극 <오늘, 오늘이의 노래>는 ‘시간 속 내 존재의 중요성’이라는 주제를 인형의 점진적 크기 변화라는 매체로 시각화했고, 연극 <오늘이>는 ‘자기 내면 성찰’을 ‘여행 가방’과 ‘텅 빈 원천강’의 은유로 형상화했다. 연극<내 이름은 강>은 ‘생태적 연대’를 마당극 형식과 ‘나무로 통일된 오브제’를 통해 알레고리적으로 표현했다. 마지막으로 국악놀이극 <춘하추동 오늘이>는 ‘놀이’를 중심으로 모든 담화 요소를 결합하여 ‘삶의 순환’이라는 주제를 체험할 수 있도록 구현했다. 사례 분석을 통해 각색 공연의 새로운 의미는 플롯, 매체, 형식, 수사법 등 여러 담화 요소들이 정교하게상호작용하고 중첩되는 과정을 통해 완성됨을 실증적으로 확인하였다. 각 작품은 개별 표현 요소의 단순한 합을 뛰어넘는 총체적 의미를 구현하기 위해, 저마다의 방식으로 담화 요소들을 유기적으로 직조하고 있었다. 본연구는 각색의 의미 생성 원리(1차 연구)와 이야기 전환 방식(2차 연구)을 다룬 선행 연구들을 잇는 최종 연구로서, 공연 각색 연구를 텍스트 중심 분석에서 벗어나 무대 위 담화 차원의 통합적 분석으로 확장했다는 학술적 의의를 갖는다.
Abstract
This study explores how new meaning is integrally expressed on stage in performance adaptation. It is a follow-up study to previous research that investigated the cognitive process of an adapter cre ating new meaning by combining an original work with a contemporary context, and the way this new meaning restructures the original story. This research proposes an ‘integrated discourse analysis’ methodology to analyze how a reconfigured story is realized as ‘discourse’ on stage. This analytical framework aims to deeply examine how various discourse elements, such as plot, medium, and rhet oric, organically interact to form a holistic expression of meaning, rather than functioning individually. To validate the effectiveness of this methodology, the study analyzes four performance adaptations of the Jeju shamanic myth, <Woncheongang Bonpuri>. The analysis confirms that new meaning in performance adaptation is completed through the sophisticated interaction of each element to create a holistic meaning that transcends the sum of individual parts. This study holds academic significance by expanding performance adaptation analysis from an element-centric approach to an integrated discourse perspective, providing a profound analytical tool that encompasses the entire adaptation process. Future research, including audience reception studies, is needed to fully understand the communication process of adaptation.
