Abstract

It is not easy to determine Pericles’ political position within Athenian democracy. For there is a possibility that Pericles could be a tyrant as a demagogue, if Athens, though in name a democracy, became in fact a government ruled by its foremost man. In this article, I examines Pericles’ political position and his leadership in relation to Athenian democracy in terms of some ancient philosophers and historians. In order to achieve this end, I examines the so-called ‘the debate of the best constitution’ which is shown Herodotus’ work. Next, this article inquires into the opposite views of Plato’ and Thucydides on Pericles’ Political activity within Athenian democracy. Lastly, I investigate Aristotle’s and Plutarch’s views of Pericles’ rule especially in focusing on Pericles’ virtue and his ethos. In this article, I attempt to conclude that Pericles was a authoritative leader who can be assessed affirmatively.
