Abstract

This article is in the analysis of the tense system between the appearance of dēmagōgos and the rule of the masses in the Classical Athens, after the death of the Pericles. The term dēmagōgos literally denotes ‘they who lead the demos’. or ‘leader of the demos’. The dēmagōgos appeared in the historical record as rabble-rousing and arrogant rabble rouser. But a number of recent scholars have viewed the demagogues as a new or different about Pericles’ successors. The most important political linkages in democratic Athens were between public speakers and mass audiences. The Athenian political culture remained at its an heart oral culture. The political culture of Athens can suggest the importance of oral culture. Attendance at Assemblies and participation in the law courts as a juror gave the citizen considerable experience with highly sophisticated rhetoric. The Athens democracy depend upon the maintenance of an ideological consensus among the citizen masses. Despite the lack of a formal state-run system of formal education, the demos itself, through the Assembly and the courts, took on a large part of the task of instilling social values in the citizens. All citizens were educated by right and wrong decisions of the Assembly and juries. The rhetor’s appeal to the mass wisdom he was addressing was based on the generalized faith the Athenians had in the collective knowledge, experiences, and judgment of the citizen body as a whole. The fair evaluation of dēmagōgos requires that we consider the dēmagōgos within historical context and in relation to the Athens rhetorical democracy. The dēmagōgos was the advocates of popular democracy and the continuos state of tension in which they lived and worked. The special tensions in their political lives emerged from a political trials and ostracism, exile, or confiscation of his property. Therefore, I argue that dēmagōgos sees it as a new political class. And the advent of dēmagōgos can be seen as a structural element in the Athenian political system.
