김환태 비평에 대한 선행연구들에서 주류를 이룬 것은 매튜 아놀드와 윌리엄 페이터 등의 수용이란 측면이었다. 그런데 김환태 자신은 여러 작가들에게서 영향을 받았다고 회고한 바 있다. 실제로 그는 아놀드와 페이터에 관한 글 이외에도 외국 평문을 번역하거나 외국문인을 다룬 글들을 다수 발표했다. 따라서 선행연구들이 그의 회고와 실체적 사실에 주목하지 않아온 관행은 문제적이다. 특히 13회에 걸쳐 연재된 프란시스 그리어슨의 「예술과 과학과 미와」가 김환태의 비평에 대한 논의에서 거론되지 않은 점은 연구사의 빈틈이라고 판단된다. 이러한 문제의식 아래 이 연구는 먼저 Ⅱ장에서 그리어슨에 대해 조사한 바를 소개하고, 김환태가 그의 문학을 수용하게 된 경로를 검토했다. Ⅲ장에서는 중심내용에 따라 그의 글을 정리하여 핵심적인 개념들을 추려냈다. 마지막으로 Ⅳ장에서는 그리어슨의 영향이 나타난 김환태 비평의 사례들을 검증하였다. 그리어슨은 예술에서 감정의 표현과 환기를 가장 중요시했지만, 현실을 도외시하는 것과 감정에만 치우치는 것을 경계했다. 이상주의와 사실주의의 폐단을 지적한 것은 이런 맥락과 닿아 있었다. 또한 그는 예술가의 정체성이 사회에 의해 침윤되어서는 안 되며, 예술가는 사회가 아닌 대문자 자연과 교감해야 한다고 주장했다. 그래서 그는 선정성이나 감상성이 아니라 소박함과 자연스러움이 예술가가 추구해야 할 바라고 강조했다. 또 다른 그의 강조점은 예술에 영원성을 부여하는 ‘심오한 감정’이었다. 이 연구는 이러한 그리어슨 예술관의 영향을 김환태 비평의 곳곳에서 확인했다. 하지만 살핀바 김환태의 비평에는 다른 여러 예술가들의 견해도 함께 혼입되어 서로를 지지해주는 양상을 보이고 있었다. 김환태는 이들 다양한 원천들을 종합하여 비평의 객관성을 확보하려고 했던 것이다. 나아가 그는 이러한 원천들을 재해석하려는 의지와 그에 따른 성과도 보여주었다. 이러한 김환태의 비평적 고투에서 그리어슨의 글은 주요한 자양의 하나로 기능하고 있었다.
Abstract
In previous studies on Kim Hwan-Tae's criticism, the mainstream was the aspect of acceptance of Matthew Arnold and William Pater. However, Kim Hwan-Tae himself recalled that he was influenced by various writers. In fact, in addition to writings about Arnold and Pater, he translated foreign critiques and wrote many articles about foreign writers. Therefore, the practice of not paying attention to his retrospect and substantive facts in previous studies is problematic. In particular, the fact that Francis Grierson's Art, Science, and Beauty was not mentioned in the discussion of Kim Hwan-Tae's criticism is judged to be a gap in the research history. With this awareness in mind, in Chapter II, I introduced my research on Grierson, and reviewed the path through which Kim Hwan-Tae came to accept Grierson's literature. In Chapter Ⅲ, I organized his writings according to the central content and extracted key concepts. Finally, in Chapter Ⅳ, I examined the cases of Kim Hwan-Tae's critique that showed Grierson's influence. So, Grierson emphasized that being naive and natural, not the sensational and the sentimental, are what artists want to pursue. Another of his emphasis was on the 'profound emotions' that give art eternity. Through this study, I confirmed that Grierson's view of art permeates various places in Kim Hwan-Tae's criticism. At the same time, we confirmed that the world of Kim Hwan-Tae's criticism was combined with the views of several other artists. It is judged that Kim Hwan-Tae tried to secure objectivity of criticism by synthesizing these various sources. Furthermore, he reinterpreted these sources and produced results. Grierson's writings functioned as one of the main nourishment in the struggle of Kim Hwan-Tae's criticism.
