Abstract

The theory of economic voting posits that voters’ retrospective sociotropic evaluations reflect objective economic conditions and these evaluations affect vote choice. However, there are good reasons to believe that voters’ evaluations are influenced by not only economic conditions but also political preferences. Nevertheless, previous studies of Korean economic voting largely ignored this possibility and examined economic voting using conventional regression analysis. This study examines panel survey data of the 2022 Korean Presidential Election the relationship between economic perception and political preference such as vote choice and partisanship. The results show that economic perception did not influence either vote choice or partisanship, while vote choice and partisanship had an impact on economic perception. That is, changes in economic perception had nothing to do with vote choice or partisanship change, while changes in vote choice and partisanship brought corresponding changes in economic perception. It suggests that different from conventional expectations, Korean voters’ economic perceptions are influenced by their political preference and not vice versa.
