본 논문은 제 17대 대통령 선거에 경제적 상황이 유권자의 후보 선택에 미친 영향을 분석하는 것이다. 유권자의 투표 선택에 영향을 줄 다른 요인들의 효과를 통제한 로지스틱 회귀분석의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 노무현 정부 5년간의 국정 운영에 대해 부정적으로 평가하고 있는 유권자는 긍정적으로 평가하고 있는 유권자에 비해 이명박 후보를 선택할 확률이 높았다. 둘째, 5년 전과 비교하여 현재 국가의 재정상태가 나빠졌다고 생각하는 유권자는 좋아졌다거나 비슷하다고 평가한 유권자에 비해 이명박 후보를 선택했을 가능성이 높았다. 셋째, 유권자 개인의 경제상태의 영향력은 통계적으로 의미가 없었다. 넷째, 경제적인 변수 이외에도 유권자의 당파적 태도와 출신 지역은 후보자 선택에 영향을 미쳤다. 분석 결과는 이번 제 17대 대선에서 유권자는 경제투표를 했음을 알 수 있다. 또한 이 논문은 정부의 정치적 실적이나 경제적 실적이 선거에 영향을 준다면 집권자는 선거에 승리하기 위해 경제정책을 선거 전에 조정할 수도 있다는 점을 감안하여 정부의 정책을 비판적으로 수용하는 정치 교육이 강화되어야 함을 논의하였다.
Abstract
This paper aimed to examine the effects of economic conditions on the 17th presidential election in Korea. The findings are as follows: First, the voters negatively evaluated the political performance of the Rho Muhyun government were more likely to choose the presidential candidate Lee Myungpark than the voters who evaluated positively. Second, the voters who evaluated that the current economic situation worse off than the economic situation of five years ago were more likely to choose the presidential candidate Lee Myungpark. Third, the partisan attitudes and regionalism also affected the voters' choice in the election. Based upon theses findings we can conclude the economic conditions affected the electoral choice of the Korean voters in the 17th presidential election.
