Abstract
How do Koreans understand democracy? Do they share the same definition of democracy or do they have different understandings of the core component of democracy? This study analyzes what elements Koreans consider as the core components of democracy and examines whether they evaluate current democracy in Korea positively or negatively based on their understanding of these components. The study divides the components of democracy into four dimensions: procedure, freedom, governance, and equality. Empirical analysis found that Koreans consider governance as the most essential element of democracy. Moreover, those who view governance as a fundamental concept of democracy were more likely to evaluate Korean democracy negatively compared to those who consider procedure as essential to democracy. People who regard social equity as a crucial factor in democracy also expressed dissatisfaction with democracy compared to those who prioritize procedure, but such negative evaluations were less intense and more cautious than those of individuals who consider governance as important.
