Abstract

This paper examines the potential directions of Donald Trump’s second presidential term on U.S. foreign policy. Since the Second World War, U.S. leaders have behaved in the order of liberal values such as free trades, multilateral relations, democracy, and various institutions in solving international issues while it played power politics in achieving its interests. After Donald Trump appeared in 2016 as president-elect, the American approach to the international politics has been changed from the liberal oriented diplomacy to the nationalistic ‘America First’ policy. Due to the situation like this, the United States under Trump is making enemies in nearly all parts of the world. ‘America First’ policy is a provocation for the rest of the world, replete with American threats of trade wars and unilateral actions by the United States thwarting hard-won international agreements. This paper argues that it does not make sense for America to go it alone, and that in any event, American power is far too limited to take on the rest of the world in a fit of Trumpian pique. Most importantly, the world shares a vital and urgent common interest in sustainable development. We will all lose unless we maintain the peace and the cooperation needed to end human-caused climate change, loss of biodiversity, massive pollution of the air, water, and land, and the growing inequalities of wealth, income, and power. If we choose right, and harness our hard-won know-how, we can accomplish great things in our time: ending poverty, stabilizing the climate, and improving the quality of lives for human beings. Korean government should direct its foreign policy toward a wiser, more peaceful, and more prudent role in the world.
