Abstract

Haengan-myeon, Buan-gun was originally the Seodo-myeon and Namsang-myeon regions of Buan-hyeon during the Joseon Dynasty. This traditional administrative district was later expanded and integrated into Haenganmyeon in 1914 by merging some villages from each of the myeons of Namha, Haseo, Ildo, Sangdong, and Yeomso, centered around the two myeons of Seodo and Namsang, forming seven villages: Gyehwa-ri, Gungan-ri, Daecho-ri, Samgan-ri, Singi-ri, Yeok-ri, and Jindong-ri. And in 1983, when Gyehwa-ri and Gungan-ri in Haengan-myeon were moved to Gyehwa-myeon, it now consists of 27 administrative villages in 5 legal districts. The study on the changes in the basic place names of this village is part of an effort to preserve and continue the historical and cultural origins of the village by thoroughly investigating the data. Therefore, in order to prove the origin of place names related to Haengan-myeon, many literary records were traced, including geographical and civil administration records of the Joseon Dynasty, regional public and private data, local administrative data during the Japanese colonial period, and modern place name survey data. As a result, it was confirmed that most of the traced villages in Haengan-myeon maintained their traditional place names. However, errors and mistakes sometimes persist because some unverifiable oral traditions are accepted as is. Nevertheless, the place names of Haengan-myeon continued to exist on a conservative basis, and even today, they have cultural heritage value that preserves the future as individual place names that symbolize the region. In this way, tracing the origins of place names in Haengan-myeon and collecting and preserving them can be considered a major task in terms of creating and securing important cultural content, as it serves as a catalyst that unites local residents.
