Abstract
This study empirically analyzed the effectiveness of online basic computer education for adult learners, with the goal of strengthening essential digital skills and bridging the widening digital divide in modern society. Conducted with 243 students at a four-yearuniversity in Gyeongbuk, the curriculum focused on Hangul and Excel. The results showed that the learners’ average scores significantly increased (p<.001) and the academic achievement gap among students decreased.Multiple regression analysis revealed thatpractice-centered teaching methods and understanding of basic functions were the key variables with the most positive influenceon academic achievement. It was also confirmed that learners’ heightened perception of the education’s practicality enhanced theirmotivation, and a self-directed learning environment significantly contributed to their achievement. A particularly noteworthy conclusion was that supplementing online education with offline extracurricular programs could maximize the learning effect. The findings suggest that an effective online education model for adult learners can be more effectively operated through practice-centeredcontent, a self-directed learning environment, and a blended (online-offline) model. This research provides empirical evidence necessary for building a sustainable lifelong learning system and is expected to offer important academic implications for the teachingmethods and design of future computer education for adults.
