Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the effects of an integrated curriculum program utilizing the metaverse on the creative problemsolving abilities of fourth-grade elementary school students.Based on the 2015 Revised Curriculum, the program integrated learningelements from Social Studies, Korean Language, Mathematics, and Art, focusing on the unit “Problems and Solutions in Rural andUrban Communities”. A total of six sessions (twelve class hours) were developed according to the Creative Problem-Solving (CPS)model, which consists of five stages: problem identification, idea generation, planning, implementation, and communication. Thestudy employed a non-equivalent control group design with 48 students (experimental group = 24, control group = 24) from a public elementary school in Seoul. The experimental group participated in the metaverse-based program, while the control group receivedtraditional textbook instruction. Quantitative data were collected through pre- and post-tests using the Creative Problem-SolvingProfile Inventory (CPSPI), and qualitative data were obtained through semi-structured student interviews. Results indicated thatthe experimental group showed a statistically significant improvement in overall creative problem-solving ability compared to thecontrol group (t=3.859, p<.001). The most notable gains were observed in the subdomains of problem identification and analysis(t=4.516, p<.001) and planning (t=3.229, p<.01). Interview analysis revealed that students perceived metaverse-based learning asengaging, collaborative, and conducive to exploring real-world problems beyond classroom limitations. These findings demonstratethat metaverse-based education enhances learners’ creativity, collaboration, and empathy, serving as an effective pedagogical environment for integrated learning. The study provides empirical evidence supporting the educational potential of the metaverse inelementary settings and offers foundational insights for designing AI-integrated, future-ready learning environments.
