Abstract

This article is to examine the logicof Korean self-government movements in the Japanese colonial period, which has been relatively neglected by previous articles. When their logic is focused we can see why Korean self-government movements could not be appreciated as -- and also develop into -- an independent movement, unlike those of other colonies. For this purpose this article classifies three concepts,that is, independent, self-government, suffrage, which have been studied separately or sometimes confusingly used by previous researches. These three concepts are related each other and can be arranged on one spectrum. Self-government can be located between independent and suffrage. Unlike India and other colonies, in Korea, self- government movements proceeded suffrage movement which were to adapt Korea to Japan completely. In India, the concept of self-government had the same status and significance with independence, and its movement was a resistance unlike Korea. In Korea, activists of self-government movements made clear that they were different from independent movements and consistently collaborated withJapan.Therefore they werecriticized by almost all of Koreans. They divided a national independent movement, weakened its power, and finally, proceeded to complete Japanization of Korea, that is, termination of Korea.
