Abstract

This study explored the effect of online counseling using expressive writing on stress events among college students. For this purpose, an online counseling program was created based on Pennebaker's expressive writing model and the instructions consisting of ‘Exposure-Devaluation-Giving meaning’. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 21.0, and the results of the study showed that stress decreased significantly after a certain period of time, and depression decreased significantly in the group participating in self-expressive writing. In addition, the results of exploring cognitive processing showed that the self-expressive writing group used more cognitive emotion regulation strategies to reinterpret stress events. This study shows that a writing strategy focused on self-disclosure can be effective as a way to reduce the negative effects of daily stress events in a relatively short period of time online. Finally, the limitations of the study and future research tasks were discussed.
