Abstract

This study evaluated the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of distilled water (PND) and 70% ethanol (PNE) extracts of Plumula Nelumbinis. At a concentration of 1,000 μg/mL, the electron-donating ability of both extracts showed that they each had more than 80% activity. Furthermore, the 2,2’-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) radical scavenging activity of the two extracts was similar to that of ascorbic acid at a concentration of 1,000 μg/mL. A cell viability assay revealed that both extracts were non-toxic at concentrations below 500 μg/mL. In the lipopolysaccharide induced group, PND and PNE inhibited nitric oxide (NO) production at a concentration of 500 μg/ mL by 37.25% and 33.48%, respectively. At a concentration of 500 μg/mL, PND suppressed the protein expression of inducible NO synthase and cyclooxygenase-2 by 13.08% and 14.29%, respectively, while PNE inhibited their expression by 7.68% and 27.98%, respectively. This study highlights the potential of Plumula Nelumbinis extracts as natural antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents, supporting their application as functional natural materials.
