Abstract
Along with beginning of the Crusades, Western Europe’s information and knowledge on Islam remarkably increased. However, it would be an oversimplification to make a distinction between the ignorance of pre-Crusade and the knowledge of post-Crusade. This article tries to indicate, based on various discourses during the Crusader period, errors of the linear view assuming that Western Europe proceeded from the darkness of ignorance to the stage of knowledge and understanding in the same period. Three types of discourses such as the unreal ones disclosing intentional indifference or distorted knowledge, the ‘enlightening’ ones seeking reasonable approach to others represented by Muslims, and the apocalyptic ones trying to interpret the presence of Islam in the context of human history following Providence, all did not tend to reflect the progress of knowledge on Islam but to take advantage of knowledge selectively and objectify this knowledge according to authors’ prejudice and ideology. In general, the Crusades did not result in exact and objective knowledge and more reasonable attitudes on Islam. And these discourses revealing “an amusing variety and a boring sameness”(J. Kritzeck) reflected self-consciousness and intellectual culture of Western Christianity as well as each author’s circumstances and disposition. In this sense, the images of Western Christianity itself were reflected in those of others represented by Islam.
