본 논문은 18세기 예천 지역에서 활동한 학자이자 문인인 조보양(趙普陽, 1709~1788)의 학문경향과 시문학적 특질을 고찰한 것이다. 조보양은 감천현(현 예천군 감천면) 출신으로, 자는 인경(仁卿), 호는 팔우헌(八友軒)이며, 65세에 조카 조석회(趙錫晦)와 함께 문과에 급제하였으나, 권신 정후겸(鄭厚謙)과의 불화로 관직을 사임하고 고향으로 돌아와 학문과 후학 양성에 전념하였다. 그는 동시대 안동 지역 문인들보다 도학적 경향보다는 문예적 성향이 두드러진 작품세계를 지녔으며, 이는 예천 지역에 내려오는 국학 전통과 임란을 목도하며 국난 극복 의지와 백성에 대한 연민을 시문으로 지은 정탁(鄭琢) 이후 이어진 지역적 정서의 영향을 받았기 때문이다. 이러한 점은 조보양이 편찬한 『골동록(汨董錄)』이라는 필기 잡록류에서 당대의 조명받지 못한 인물과 역사적 사실을 조명하는데 관심을 보인 것과, 문집에 실려있는 작품에서도 드러나고 있다. 이에 본고에서는 그의 사승·교유관계와 필기잡록 편찬의식, 그리고 시의 주제와 형상화 양상을 종합적으로 고찰함으로써, 18세기 예천 지역 학자 조보양이 추구한 다층적인 문학적 면모를 밝히는 데 목적을 두었다.
Abstract
This study examines the scholarly orientation and literary characteristics of Jo Boyang(趙普陽, 1709~1788), a scholar and writer active in 18th-century Yecheon. Born in Gamcheon-hyeon(present-day Gamcheon-myeon, Yecheon- gun), Jo’s courtesy name was In-gyeong(仁卿) and his sobriquet Paluheon(八友軒). At the age of sixty-five, he passed the civil service examination together with his nephew Jo Seok-hoe(趙錫晦), but, after a conflict with the powerful courtier Jeong Hu-gyeom(鄭厚謙), he resigned from office and returned to his hometown, devoting himself to study, self-cultivation, and the education of younger scholars. Compared with his contemporaries in the Andong literary circle, Jo’s works display a distinctly literary and aesthetic inclination rather than a strictly Neo-Confucian moral didacticism. This tendency reflects both the classical learning traditions of the Yecheon region and the regional sentiment that had developed since Jeong Tak(鄭琢, 1526~1605), who expressed compassion for the people and the will to overcome national crises such as the Imjin War through poetry. Such characteristics are also evident in his compilation of the Goltongnok(汨董錄) a miscellany of anecdotes highlighting overlooked historical figures and events—as well as in many of his poetic works. This paper thus investigates Jo Boyang’s teacher–disciple and intellectual networks, his consciousness in compiling miscellaneous writings, and the themes and imagery of his poetry. Through this comprehensive approach, the study aims to elucidate the multilayered literary aspects pursued by Jo Boyang and to reveal the distinctive features of 18th-century Yecheon literati culture.
