이 논문은 중봉 조헌(重峯 趙憲, 1544∼1592)의 시문학을 유가 문론의 핵심 개념인 ‘재도적 의경(載道的 意境)’의 관점에서 고찰한 것이다. 조헌의 시는 도학적 수양과 윤리적 실천을 시적 언어로 형상화한 문학적 실천의 장으로 이해된다. 충(忠), 효(孝), 의(義), 애민(愛民) 등의 유가적 덕목은 그의 시 속에서 내면의 정념으로 숙성되고 자연과 경물의 이미지와 결합 되어 시적 경계(意境)로 구현된다. 그의 시는 개인의 심정을 표현하는 데 그치지 않고, 유학적 가치와 철학적 신념을 정련된 언어로 전달한다. 유학의 수양론과 성리학적 우주관이 시의 정서 구조 안에서 유기적으로 통합하고 있다. 이를 통해 조선 중기 유학 문학이 지향한 공공성과 도덕성을 충실히 담아낸 것으로 이해하였다. 조헌은 문학을 도를 담는 그릇으로 인식하고, 이를 통해 도덕적 진실과 사회적 책임을 함께 드러내고자 하였다. 그의 시문학은 형식과 내용, 감정과 윤리가 조화를 이루는 구조를 지니며, 유가 문론의 이상을 문예적으로 실현하였다. 따라서 조헌의 시는 예술성과 실천성을 함께 아우르는 재도적 문학의 사례라 할 수 있다.
Abstract
This paper examines the poetic literature of Cho Heon (Cho Jungbong, 1544–1592) from the perspective of the Confucian literary theory concept of “jaedo-jeok uigyeong” (載道的 意境, the poetic realm that conveys the Way). Cho Heon’s poetry can be understood as a literary practice that embodies Confucian self-cultivation and ethical action through refined poetic language. Core Confucian virtues such as loyalty (忠), filial piety (孝), righteousness (義), and compassion for the people (愛民) are internalized as moral sentiments and are aesthetically realized through images of nature and surrounding phenomena. Rather than merely expressing personal emotion, his poetry articulates Confucian ideals and philosophical convictions with rhetorical precision. His works organically integrate the theories of self-cultivation and the Neo-Confucian cosmological worldview within the emotional structure of poetry. Through this, Cho Heon’s writings faithfully reflect the public orientation and moral aspirations of Confucian literature in mid-Joseon Korea. Recognizing literature as a vessel for the Way (道), Cho sought to reveal both moral truth and social responsibility through his poetry. His poetic works harmonize form and content, emotion and ethics, thereby aesthetically realizing the ideals of Confucian literary discourse. As such, Cho Heon’s poetry serves as a representative example of “literature that carries the Way,” embodying both artistic merit and practical moral purpose
