Abstract
This study aims to examine the manuscript tradition of Hwangwolseonjeon in the Yeongnam region and the literary responses of female copyists. Among the 26 extant handwritten versions of Hwangwolseonjeon, the majority were produced in the Yeongnam area (20), with a small number found in Chungcheong (3) and Gangwon (1). The prevalence of this work in Yeongnam can be attributed to the active engagement of women from Confucian scholar families, who favored its moral themes. Women were the primary copyists of the text (19 out of 26 versions), with most transcription activities concentrated during the agricultural off-season. The literary engagement of these female copyists reflects distinct interpretive patterns. First, the first group of manuscripts emphasizes Confucian moral values by portraying the punishment of the wicked stepmother. Second, the third group diverges by showing forgiveness and familial reconciliation, suggesting an alternative ethical perspective. Third, the narrative of Wolseon’s suffering and resilience evokes deep empathy among female readers, particularly regarding the unjust treatment of women in patriarchal society. Fourth, the strong bond between half-siblings in the story reflects women’s latent desires for familial harmony. Lastly, the inclusion of letters, elegies, and lyrical compositions reveals the protagonist's emotional world and underscores the expressive power of women’s writing. Ultimately, Hwangwolseonjeon functioned as both a moral text and a medium for women’s literary expression and emotional solidarity in the late Joseon period, particularly within the socio-cultural context of the declining yangban class in Yeongnam.
