Abstract

This paper aims to shed new light on the significance of regularity and contingency inherent in nature through a philosophical and theological reflection on natural laws. Traditionally, natural laws have been understood as scientific formulations that mathematically describe patterns consistently observed in natural phenomena. Grounded in this view, modern physics―particularly Newtonian me- chanics―has long contributed to the conception of nature as a closed and static system governed by immutable laws. However, re- cent developments in the philosophy of science have challenged this view by raising critical questions about the nature of these laws: are they inherent structures of reality, or merely descriptive general- izations derived from empirical observations? While scientific inquiry can explain how regularities manifest, it often falls short of addressing why such regularities exist, thereby inviting further philosophical and theological reflection. Therefore, this study argues for the neces- sity of understanding natural laws as descriptive accounts that char- acterize patterns repeatedly observed within the natural world, based on the assumption that currently known physical laws are merely provisional approximations of any ultimate laws that may exist. This interpretive shift allows nature to be viewed not as a rigid, determin- istic order but as an open and dynamic system that includes the pos- sibility of contingency and novelty. Within this openness, the on- going creative activity and providence of God may be discerned theologically. Rather than excluding divine action, natural laws can be seen as the very structures through which God’s free and faithful engagement with creation takes place. In this light, creation is not confined to a singular moment in the past but is understood as a con- tinuous unfolding process (creatio continua) in which newness per- sists at every moment, and in which the laws of nature function as theological expressions of God’s enduring presence and providential care.
