Abstract

In the 21st century, “document” studies has shifted from “documentation” strategies which produce knowledge to “documentality” which is this concept of the properties of documents that influence on human behavior and life. Steyerl explores the relationship between govermentality and documentary truth through the concept of documentality in the fields of film and art, while Ferraris understands documentality as inscribed acts in social objects. Frohmann views documentality as inherent properties of objects and focuses on the arrangement of documents, and the agency of human and non-human actors. This article aims to examine the diverse implications of “documentality”, analyzing how the documents are arranged in the various artworks of film, art, and theatre. Additionally, this article seeks to examine the conflicting and opposing points between Steyerl, Ferraris, and Frohmann’s concepts of documentality, and reframing these differences as complementary relationships to propose a more integrated concept of documentality.
