최근 리얼리티쇼가 급증하고 제작현장에서 장르형식의 융합이 일반화되면서 픽션을 중심으로 한 드라마와 예능간의 장르경계가 무너지고 허구를 기반으로 한 페이크 다큐멘터리 까지 등장하였다. 이에 따라 사실적 소재를 기반으로 연출을 최소화해 제작한다는 다큐멘터리의 기본정체성이 무엇인가에 대한 질문이 대두되었다. 역설적으로 심각해진 정치경제적 상황이 정신과 가치 영역을 붕괴시키면서 다큐멘터리가 가진 진실추구와 사회적 어젠더 설정이라는 기본정신의 중요성이 다시 부각되고 있다. 다큐멘터리가 사실을 근거로 제작되며 사실 속에서 진실을 추구한다는 정신이 오늘 날 더욱 절실하기 때문이다. 다큐멘터리 역사 100년 동안 다큐멘터리의 기본정신은 사실을 그대로 기록하는 것이었다. 하지만 사실속의 진실추구라는 다큐멘터리의 기본정신이 현실세계의 재창조를 통한 주관적 메시지의 전달이라는 다큐멘터리의 제작형태를 두고 논란을 낳고 있다. 본 논문에서는 사실성, 연출허용, 객관성이라는 키워드로 다큐멘터리에 대한 논쟁적 쟁점을 역사적으로 살펴본다.
Abstract
Recently we have seen a dramatic surge in the number of reality shows. A practice of synthesizing different genres at film making field has become common, as well. Consequently, the boundary between drama and reality show is disappearing. Moreover, a new genre called “Fake Documentary” - which is a documentary based on fiction – has appeared. Documentary film makers are faced with a question what constitutes fundamental identity of a documentary film, which was traditionally made by “Facts in the real world” with minimum directing. Current deterioration of political and economic reality is also undermining moral & ethical value of our society. As a result, the core values that are essential to documentary films – such as commitment to pursuing truth and dedication to creating meaningful social agendas – are again being highlighted. This paper will do a historical examination on the debate over documentary in three different aspects of originality, allowance of directing and subjectivity.
