Abstract

This study aims to demonstrate the continued relevance of Allan Sekula’s discussions on documentary photography. Documentary photography has evolved beyond mere factual recording to encompass artistic and social interventions. In particular, during the 1970s and 1980s, the shifting position of photography within art history made it a key subject of debate. At that time, Sekula was studying at the San Diego School of Art, where he and his peers were deeply engaged in exploring the photographic medium. He later developed his position more concretely through his critical writings. Sekula challenged the binary view that separated photography’s documentary nature from its artistic qualities. Instead, he sought to examine how photographic meaning is constructed within discursive and institutional contexts. He also criticized the unregulated circulation of photographic images within the broader flow of late capitalism, shedding light on the power dynamics entangled in the production and consumption of photographic imagery. Through this critical approach, he aimed to reconsider and redefine the role and potential of “documentary.” This paper analyzes his seminal essays, “On the Invention of Photographic Meaning”(1975) and “Dismantling Modernism, Reinventing Documentary”(1978), to explore how Sekula’s redefinition of “documentary” continues to shape contemporary photographic discourse and to reassess its significance today. Sekula’s perspective not only offers a specific historical insight into the artistic practices of the 1970s and 1980s but also continues to inform contemporary documentary discourse. His works provided a critical framework for understanding the practices of figures such as Susan Sontag, Hito Steyerl, and Ariella Azoulay.
